who we are

Loam Blocks are architecturally inspired heirloom wood toy blocks, all natural, sustainably sourced, and fully made in the USA.

A Love Story

Loam was born as a love story.

The concept was sparked when my siblings, cousins, and friends started having babies, and toys and play came back into all of our lives. As a practicing architect born and raised in Santa Monica, California, I thought back to my own childhood; to the hours spent with wooden blocks, trains, and simple toys that fostered my imagination and enhanced my understanding of the world. Those memories were more than play; they were the beginnings of self-prompted problem-solving, of uniquely personal creativity, of learning how to engineer, how to build and invent simply and quietly, at my own pace.

I was inspired to give these young minds what I had as a child: the gift of playing with toys free of plastic, of noises, of screens. I wanted to create something that was lasting, sustainable, and that created value. So with a miter saw and a drill press, I made the first set of blocks in my garage for my new baby nephew. The first iterations were joyfully rough and imperfect, but they captured the spirit I hoped to pass on: the gift of creating something from nothing, with your own hands, in your own way.

As my wife and I now raise our four children, those same blocks have become part of our home play routine. Now a bit more refined, and a million detailed sketches later, they still hold that initial spirit of slowing down, developing imagination, and most importantly, are still made with love. Our children are discovering what I had once discovered as a child: quiet moments of imagination, worlds built from wood and wonder, the joy of creating something beautiful and good.

Loam was born as a love story for family, for home, and for the simple beauty of play for everyone, whoever you are.

This is our invitation to slow down, to build, to wonder, and to connect.

From Our Family to Yours

With four children, Loam block playtime has brought a peace and calm that has become essential to our sanity. The mindful designing and engineering taking place in our living room has been a source of soulful rest that we all need. In a multi-tasking, screen-filled world, these blocks have allowed for refreshingly slow, quiet, and analog playtime.

Because Loam implements the tools and principles of great architecture and design, creative play with our blocks results in a beautiful finished product, every time. It is so exciting to discover that whatever we build with Loam ultimately starts to resemble a real structure or building or monument that one might stumble upon in a real city. This has opened up so many moments of make-believe and fantastical worlds of play over the years.

And like our name suggests, Loam is intentionally earthbound, relying on nature for our colors and textures of our blocks. As opposed to some toys we can’t wait to purge, our family enjoys the tactile delight of clean, natural wooden toys that become more and more lovely as they are used and as they age.

It is a joy to watch our kids learn as they build. As they navigate complexity and plan proactively, we see our kids developing confidence and problem-solving skills. We hope these practiced skills will be a helpful gift as they grow into the challenges of adult life.

At Loam, we celebrate that play is essential in the growth and enrichment of a thriving mind. We believe that not all play is equal. Some types of entertainment can leave us feeling lethargic and unmotivated; whereas imaginative play with Loam blocks brings a rejuvenating burst of inspiration and creative energy.
